» sayfish - worms in my marine tank

i am somewhat new to the marine aquariums, but started mine about 3 months ago. I have several yrs experience with the freshwater tanks, but this is all new to me. I bought one fish and have been so careful about what I add to the tank. I used crushed coral and then added a live rock (just one rock). About 2 wks ago, I added a new fish, and he only survived a few days, but my first one has been doing great. The past couple of days he's been acting strange, I tested the salinity, the nitrates, and the ammonia levels, and all were fine. Tonight, the fish died, and while i was getting him out of the tank, I discovered 3 worms, 2 under the live rock!! My fish had a red streak on his head too?! Any ideas about what this could be or where the worm came from? I don't know if that's what killed the fish and/or how to get rid of them....i think there's still one more in the tank and I can't find it. The largest one was at least an inch long with tons of legs! GROSS!

Sorry about your fish! The 'legs' are interesting - if they really are (were!) 'worms' then they don't have legs. Most marine worms have paddles either side - and these can look like legs, but if they really were legs then it means that they were some sort of crustacean - probably 'isopods' who got in with the live rock. Your question is really one for Doug - he knows about aquaria. I'll alert him. Good luck.

The worms come in hidden on the live rock.Their very hard to catch you don't want to keep taking down everything. Some stores actual sell worm traps.

Just a thought - if we kept everything here in the 'discussion' then everyone who reads could benefit. As it is, interesting stuff goes back and forth in emails, and the rest of us are left wondering what was said! (I'm very keen to know about these 'worms' - maybe others are too?).
P.S. I'm not at all interested in my 'space' here - I would just like the info :-)
