I would see if i knew anyone with a aquarium that has been set up for awhile and take a bit of subtrate from his tank,to help speed things up for you.When every I set up a new tank I use a dirty power filter to start the tank with, seems to work every time for me. Also lay low on 50% water changes doesnt help the fish.Also use stress coat in your tank.Most pet shops will just sell you what every catches your eye just so they can make a buck, some where in my old articles, I have a article on how to find and check out good shops.
