what can I do to speed up the nitrogen cycling process. I've got a couple of sad fish with New Tank Syndrome. The nitrite levels are about 3.5ppm and the nitrate hasn't started even registering yet.

I'm doing 50% water changes every day, trying to keep a lid on it, but the fish have stopped eating. One is a pimelodia pictus and he's suffering the most. I know, I know it's not a good choice fr a newb in a new tank, but no-one at the fish shop said anything (not going there again).
