» Freshwaterman - BUGS~

Okay so i have this fishtank in my garage and i haven't cleaned it since july 2006 and somehow the water is still there like 2/3 of the 30 gallon aquarium. I was lazy but i made my mind to clean the aquarium today and i went down to clean it and there are see through worms like 3 inches long and smaller ones and millions of those small black bugs that swim around~ i just don't want to touch the water/aquarium~ how do i kill the bugs?so i can clean the water out?

I suppose I'm just 'weird' - but I would get interested in these 'worms and bugs' and try to find out what they were first :-)
(Perhaps that's why I write mostly about 'bugs')!
This is a question for Doug. I'm sure he will get back to you with a sensible reply.

Worm's is the topic, the type that you have is a member of the glass worm family. The eggs of these worms are found in dried flake food. When your tank is running right and not over fed or starting to pollute you will have no problem with these worm's. They are not dangerous and some fish actually eat them. What I would do is get everything up and running new charcoal in the filter air and such then add some aquarium salt after a 40% water change.I'm sure after that the worm's will slowly die off.
If this is of no help please post again, there are many answers to this question.
Thanks Doug

Alternatively just dump the water, take your gravel out wash it, and start from scratch. If your gravel is washed properly there will be no eggs left.

what can I do to speed up the nitrogen cycling process. I've got a couple of sad fish with New Tank Syndrome. The nitrite levels are about 3.5ppm and the nitrate hasn't started even registering yet.

I'm doing 50% water changes every day, trying to keep a lid on it, but the fish have stopped eating. One is a pimelodia pictus and he's suffering the most. I know, I know it's not a good choice fr a newb in a new tank, but no-one at the fish shop said anything (not going there again).

I would see if i knew anyone with a aquarium that has been set up for awhile and take a bit of subtrate from his tank,to help speed things up for you. When every I set up a new tank I use a dirty power filter to start the tank with, seems to work every time for me. Also lay low on 50% water changes doesnt help the fish. Also use stress coat in your tank. Most pet shops will just sell you what every catches your eye just so they can make a buck, some where in my old articles, I have a article on how to find and check out good shops.
Hope I have been of a little help.

» raybadd - bala shark with red strips on the fins

I have a large 50 gl tank with three Angelfish and bunch of different kind of loachs and a bala shark. In the last week, the bala shark all of a sudden showed up with a red strip on the top fin and yesterday more red strips on it, now on the back fin.

Can someone please tell me if this a normal or does the it have some type of disease and if it does, how to treat it?

Thanks so much,
Ray

Ray Hi Ray
I just did some quick research on the red, I have never seen it in 45 years of fish keeping, I would ask is the red parts raw, and if so is there anyone picking on the shark or is there any sharp edges in the tank on decorations or anything that he could rub against. But in my reasearch I did for you, there are people that swear out there that they have had such sharks. So with out doing further research which I would do for you I really dont know what to say.
Thanks Doug

My 55 gal tank has been running for two months. Today all the fish are at the very top at the water line opening and closing their mouths. I have had an issue of high ph and added some white vinager??? I did a 40% water change and immediatly the fish seemed to come around and start swimming again. An hour later same thing, at the top of the tank. Any ideas where I should go from here. One fish has died so far.

You don't mention how many fish you have in your tank. What is the PH level, and what you are using for air, and filtration, E-mail me this information and I would be glad to help you solve your problem. Thxs Doug
