Red Admiral Butterfly

about an 'admirable' butterfly that migrates.

The article has bits about the biology of the Red Admiral including some favourite plants, migration and the origin of the name.

I like Red Admirals - I think everyone does! Perhaps it is because of their beauty, or perhaps because they are often seen on sunny days? (Maybe their 'territorial' and 'aggressive' behaviour explain both?).

I find it amazing that such a tiny brain can navigate so successfully, and that such an inefficient (?) flying machine - which must burn up fuel at a phenomenal rate - can power such long journeys. But nevertheless, from Guatemala to Canada, and from Spain to Scotland, - they do it each year.

I think I'm a hero when I drive my Morris Minor from Yorkshire to Aquitaine, but to think of doing the journey on the back of a butterfly - well!

I have continued my strategy of using 'Wikipedia' a lot, and have suggested that readers might like to get involved in butterfly conservation and research.

I also seem to have written - fish - insect - fish - insect - so far, and while I will not alternate them strictly, I will try to keep this balance in future articles (with the odd spider and crustacean thrown in 'for good measure'!).
